ralph richter works with analogue photographic processes, valuable and rare materials based on historic chemical processes. the platinum-palladium prints, the works in wet plate collodion and the different forms of cyanotype are made entirely by hand. these are complemented by works on fine, handmade japanese gampi paper such as tosa hakkinshi pure gampi, whose translucent materiality and delicate surface make the photographic process itself visible. at their core, these are black-and-white processes. dichromate-based extensions allow additional layers of colour to be integrated into the image-making process. colour is not added as a subsequent effect, but develops as part of the photographic and chemical construction. the result is unique photographic objects in which material, chemistry and craft are inseparably connected.
