the images first take form as black-and-white platinum-palladium prints. once dry, the finished print is prepared with a layer of gelatin, forming the basis for a second image layer. for this, I additionally create a second negative specifically adjusted to the blue tones that will follow. a mixture of gum arabic, colour pigments and light-sensitive dichromate is then applied over the platinum print and exposed again.
the entire process is complex and multi-stage, and can extend over several days. despite precise preparation, the material never responds with complete predictability. only experience makes it possible to bring the individual stages into balance so that both image layers can be guided into a single photographic object.
